Ever feel like there’s so much work piling up from all directions that you don’t know where to start? We’ve all been there. Work, relationships, expectations and disappointments can make one feel constantly overwhelmed, and overcome with this feeling of cognitive fatigue, as it becomes more and more difficult to handle your tasks or commitments. Luckily, there are ways to manage these feelings.

Here are 4 ways to manage feeling overwhelmed:

  1. Prioritise your tasks
Making a to-do-list and prioritising the tasks in the list is an easy way to manage tasks effectively. One way to do this is to differentiate between tasks as urgent, important and less important. Another way would be to identify tasks that would take up a lot of time, and to plan your work accordingly. You could either tackle this task first before moving onto others, or vice versa.
  2. Break tasks into smaller parts
If the sheer size of the task is what’s making you overwhelmed, then it might help to break down the task into smaller parts. This can make the task seem more approachable, and easy to complete.
  3. Negate and delegate
It’s always good to help someone out, but if you’re don’t really have time for it, then learn to say no.
On the flip side, delegating work is also a good strategy to reduce stress, especially when it’s a task that you neither enjoy doing, nor are good at! This can enable you to focus on tasks that actually require your time and expertise.
  4. Manage perfectionism
Perfectionism often leads to decision paralysis and excessive procrastination. Ask yourself if spending more time on the task at hand would actually add more value to the end product. If your answer is “no”,then know that you are done with the task.

There is often that one dreaded task that is making you feel stressed and overwhelmed. If you cannot delegate this work, then figure out a schedule to manage it. Break it down into smaller tasks if that helps! While you do all this, it’s important to remember to take care of yourself. Spend that extra time everyday doing something that makes you feel relaxed and happy!
